THE INSPIRING LIFE OF TEXAN HÉCTOR P. GARCÍA

EDINBURG - The Museum of South Texas History (“MOSTHistory”) welcomes Cecilia García-Akers, the daughter of Dr. Héctor P. García, who will present “The Inspiring Life of Texan Héctor P. García” Sunday July 10 starting at 2 p.m. in the Courtyard Gallery.
Dr. Héctor P. García, a Mercedes native, earned undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Texas in Austin. García also served with distinction in the Army during World War II. After the war, Dr. García opened a medical practice in Corpus Christi where he witnessed the struggles of veterans and migrant workers, which inspired him to lifetime commitment in social reform.

The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation was honored at the Sealy Society Dinner on April 15, 2016 at The University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston. The Dr. Hector Foundation has established the Hector P. Garcia, MD Endowed Presidential Scholarship in the School of Medicine that will assist a student from the Corpus Christi, or Rio Grande Valley area. We are so pleased to be recognized by the medical school that Dr. Garcia was its first Mexican American graduate, and the same university that his daughter Cecilia Garcia Akers is a graduate from the School of Allied Health Sciences.

En los archivos de la biblioteca de la universidad de Texas A&M, campus de Corpus Christy, hay un cartel con el llamado “¡Atención Veteranos!” en el que “se invita a todos los veteranos de Taft, Texas,… y pueblos vecinos a oír al Dr. Héctor García”. La fecha: 30 de diciembre de 1948; y las preguntas sobre el cartel : “¿Qué van a hacer los veteranos con las escuelas segregadas en Taft? ¿Qué van a hacer los padres de familia con 778 niños que no van a la escuela?” Ése es el ambiente en que comenzó a desarrollar su trabajo el doctor Héctor P. García, uno de los grandes líderes en la lucha de los derechos civiles de los hispanos en Estados Unidos.
