Cecilia Garcia Akers, guest columnist: Dr. Hector P. Garcia’s life spent in sacrifice, advocacy, for a better Texas

Dr. Hector P. Garcia Texas State Recognition Day is celebrated every year on the third Wednesday of September. This year, we celebrated statewide on Sept. 16 to coincide with the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Recognition Day was passed in 2009 and signed by Gov. Rick Perry. We didn’t intend for this to be a paid day off. The holiday was passed for schools, communities and the public to celebrate Dr. Garcia’s accomplishments and contributions to this state and nation. This day is to give everyone an opportunity to celebrate my father’s remarkable life. Tonight we highlight that life at the American GI Forum’s Hector Perez Garcia Banquet in McLennan Hall at the Waco Convention Center beginning at 7 p.m.

UTMB Galveston School of Medicine

The Dr. Hector P Garcia Memorial Foundation announced today the creation of the Hector P Garcia M.D. Endowed Presidential Scholarship in the School of Medicine. The Endowed Presidential Scholarship represents a $50,000 investment to the School of Medicine from the Dr. Hector P Garcia Memorial Foundation. The Foundation recognizes UTMB's committment to diversity and recognizes Dr. Hector P Garcia as one of its most distinguished alumnus. The Foundation is honored to be in partnership with UTMB for this scholarship that will be awarded to a deserving student in the medical school.

Students Honor Civil Rights Leader

An annual mass recognizing Dr. Hector P. Garcia teaches students about the iconic Corpus Christi physician, civil rights leader and founder of the American G. I. Forum.

Students at the elementary level of Incarnate Word Academy learned about Dr. Garcia and the legacy he left behind during the event in the academy chapel Wednesday.

Mathew Mata said a few months ago he did not know about Dr. Hector P. Garcia.

"I had seen his name around town and heard about him, but I just didn't know who he was or what he did," Mata said.

A Geology major at Del Mar College, Mata was at a the school's Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day luncheon Thursday. The event honored the legacy of the Corpus Christi civil rights leader, physician and American G.I. Forum Founder.
