What a full-circle moment. In 2023, I was grateful to help bring forward a proclamation recognizing Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day in Mercedes. Earlier this year, I returned with another idea: to permanently recognize his legacy through a street designation in the community that helped shape him.

What followed was months of meetings, a citizen committee, public input, a community survey, City Commission approval, and finally, last night, the unveiling of Dr. Hector P. Garcia Avenue.

Standing there and helping lead the ceremony was a special reminder of what can happen when an idea is met with community support and people willing to work together to see it through.

Dr. Garcia went from the halls of Mercedes High School to becoming a physician, World War II veteran, founder of the American GI Forum, Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, and one of our nation’s most consequential civil rights leaders. His impact reached across America, but Mercedes will always be part of his story.

Now, generations from today will travel this road, see his name, and hopefully ask the most important question: Who was Dr. Hector P. Garcia?

And because of that question, his story will continue to be told.

Thank you to the Garcia family, the City of Mercedes, my fellow committee members, our elected officials, community partners, and every resident who participated in this process and helped make this possible.

Dr. Garcia’s journey took him far beyond Mercedes.

But now, his legacy has come home."
