Dr. Garcia’s birthday celebration will be held on Jan. 16.

The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation has announced the birthday celebration of Dr. Hector P. Garcia on Jan. 16, 2015 at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. The annual celebration pays tribute to Dr. Garcia by raising awareness to the community, state and nation of Dr. Garcia’s contributions to this country. The theme for this event will be " recognizing his accomplishments for the next 100 years".

The luncheon event will commence at 11 a.m. and conclude at 1:30 p.m. The celebration will be attended by many dignitaries and an invited nationally-recognized speaker.

Dr. Hector P. Garcia is considered an American hero and was a Mexican-American Civil Rights Activist, Mexican immigrant, distinguished physician, and humanitarian. Dr. Garcia received many awards during his long and momentous career. Dr. Garcia was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan, has five schools, a hospital wing, and a post office named after him. The United States Army has recognized him as one of the most influential Hispanics to serve in this branch of the military. In 2009, the Texas Legislature passed SB-495 the “Dr. Hector P. Garcia Texas State Recognition Day,” the third Wednesday in September, for communities and schools to honor him.

The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation was organized to educate state-wide and national communities about the continuing historical relevance and legacy of Dr. Hector P. Garcia and, to encourage, promote and foster the continuation of his ideals through establishing charitable projects and educational scholarships, to work with various universities, colleges and schools, and to support those whom the Foundation believes share and actively strive to promote the same ideals that Dr. Garcia valued.

The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation is a recognized 501c3 Non-Profit Corporation by the State of Texas. The proceeds from this event will assist in the funding of the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Learning Center at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Dr. Garcia donated his papers in 1990 to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and the Learning Center is crucial for the proper display and full appreciation by the public and students for the papers historical value.
