Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation Supports New Health Care Facility
The new Dr. Hector P. Garcia Family Center will be located in Corpus Christi, TX.
San Antonio, TX (PRWEB) July 30, 2014
The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation, in collaboration with Christus Spohn Health, recently announced the proposed
naming of the new primary care facility in Corpus Christi, TX: the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Family Health Center.
The proposed 40,000 sq. ft. facility will provide state-of-the-art primary health care services, including comprehensive chronic disease management programs, pharmacy services and wellness and prevention education. It will also be a pioneering medical home model center.
Dr. Hector P. Garcia, for whom the facility is named, is considered an American hero and was a Mexican-American
civil rights activist, Mexican immigrant, physician and humanitarian. He was a pioneer in medical care for the Coastal Bend area for over 50 years and was the first Mexican-American recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor.
Dr. Garcia received many awards and recognition during his long and eventful career. He has five schools named after him, as well as a hospital wing, post office and the U.S. Army has recognized him as one of the most influential Hispanics to serve in this branch of the military.
Dr. Garcia provided medical health care services to all regardless of their ability to pay and he was instrumental in the desegregation of Corpus Christi schools and hospitals. In 2009, the Texas Legislature passed SB495 the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Texas State Recognition Day, the third Wednesday in September, for communities and schools to honor him.
The proposed completion date for the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Family Center is believed to be in 2016 and the facility will be located on Morgan Avenue in Corpus Christi, TX. Christus Spohn Health is planning a transformation of health care services for the Coastal Bend, including renovation of the Shoreline facility.
