There has been some back-and-forth going on in our opinion section in recent weeks on a subject that may sound boring but should inflame real passion for the sake of this community. It has to do with historically significant local archives and whether Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi cares enough about them to do right by them. Most prominent among these archives is the Dr. Hector P. Garcia collection.
The reason we all should be on full alert is that the Garcia collection isn't just about dead people and the past. It's about us and the future. This is our legacy, our heritage — a legacy and heritage that does not exclude people with surnames like Whitehurst. Don't kid yourselves, people not named Armando or Lupe, that Dr. Hector and his allies didn't change your lives for the better, too. Proper research and analysis of his and other local archives can and should rewrite American history as we know it.

The beauty and magnificence of the buildings on the Texas A&M University– Corpus Christi campus make me proud to be a three-time graduate of that university.

As an educator, knowing that it is a place of learning intensifies the feeling of jubilance, and I am happy knowing that members of
my family and community are benefiting from the highcaliber instructors who teach there.
Still, as an alumnus, I feel a sense of yearning for a stronger connection that reflects the diversity, struggles and triumphs of the people in South Texas.

Dr. Hector P. Garcia Texas State Recognition Day is celebrated every year on the third Wednesday of September. This year, we celebrated statewide on Sept. 16 to coincide with the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month.
Recognition Day was passed in 2009 and signed by Gov. Rick Perry. We didn’t intend for this to be a paid day off. The holiday was passed for schools, communities and the public to celebrate Dr. Garcia’s accomplishments and contributions to this state and nation. This day is to give everyone an opportunity to celebrate my father’s remarkable life. Tonight we highlight that life at the American GI Forum’s Hector Perez Garcia Banquet in McLennan Hall at the Waco Convention Center beginning at 7 p.m.
