Hector P. Garcia Would Have Been 103

Cuban-American actor and director Tony Plana reflected on his career with Hector P. Garcia's legacy in mind.

Plana, who was the keynote speaker at Tuesday's Dr. Hector P. Garcia Birthday Luncheon, highlighted a milestone in his more than 40-year career.

"I've played a variety of characters ... I was able to go from playing the Mexican bandit (Jefe) in "¡Three Amigos!" to playing Secretary of State (Mickey Troop) in “The West Wing,”  said Plana, who also narrated "The Longoria Affair." "And the reason for that is I was able to — I took the time to educate myself. My education is responsible for my ability to play (roles in) different socioeconomic levels, to get past those early Latino, negative stereotypes that I had to play just to survive. Just to be called an actor ... I was able to because of my education. And that is emblematic of what we need to achieve in education. It is exactly what Dr. Hector P. Garcia was advocating."

New health clinic opens on birthday of namesake

When Lauren Treat arrived in Corpus Christi four years ago, she found the perfect primary care physician.

On Tuesday, Treat was served at the newly opened Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Family Health Center. She had lab work done while her husband also saw a doctor in the same facility.

Treat has lupus and a spinal condition, so it was natural that she was concerned when her doctor said she was planning to leave Christus Spohn after her residency was complete in the summer.

"(Dr. Garcia) is wonderful, but I've already got a new (doctor) that she set me up with," Treat said. "Honestly, the only thing that would make (the facility) better would be a louder speaker (in the pharmacy area)."
