IWA Mass Celebrates Dr. Hector's Legacy

The third Wednesday of September is the official state recognition day for Dr. Hector P. Garcia.
IWA was honored to hold a special Elementary and Middle Level Mass to honor his legacy.
Dr. Hector P. Garcia's daughter, Cecilia Garcia-Akers '70 and his son-in-law, Jim Akers,
attended the Mass along with family members and board members of the
Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation. Fr. John Gaffney served as celebrant and
reminded us of Dr. Hector P. Garcia's significant contributions in the areas of justice,
education and health.
Cecilia and Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation board members presented a check
for $2,000 to the IWA Investing in Excellence tuition assistance program at the end of Mass.
Cecilia also took time to visit with the fifth and eighth grade classes after Mass to
teach them more about how her father advocated for change.
