    Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

    Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and Dr. Hector P. Garcia's Legacy. These wonderful events are free to the public. 


  • 2023 Dr. Hector P. Garcia Texas State Recognition Day, Mercedes, Tx.

    The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation is honored to announce that the Mercedes Texas Commissioner's Court has voted to approve a yearly celebration of the legacy of Dr. Hector P. Garcia on the recognized Texas State Recognition Day which is the 3rd Wednesday of September.

    Dr. Hector P. Garcia immigrated to Mercedes, TX from Mexico in 1917, and attended his primary and secondary education in Mercedes, TX, along with his family of 6 siblings. The Garcia Family operated a dry goods store, while his father Jose Garcia, taught his children the basics of education in order for them to achieve the highest education goals possible.  Six of seven surviving children became medical doctors.

    Special thanks to Skyler Howell for his presentation to the Commissioner's Court that ensured passage of the Proclamation.  The Foundation is looking forward to celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Hector P. Garcia in Mercedes, TX.


  • San Antonio's Inspiring Woman-Volume 7

    The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation is pleased to announce
    the Foundation's Board President/Chair, Cecilia Garcia Akers has been
    selected to be included in San Antonio's Inspiring Woman Book, Volume
    7.
    Inspiring Woman Book features 50 successful women of San Antonio in
    business, media, non-profit corporations and medicine.
    This 2023 edition is Ms. Garcia Akers second inclusion in this
    publication.
    The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation's Board of Directors
    congratulates Ms. Garcia Akers for her continued advocacy in
    healthcare and education.

     

     


  • 2024 Luncheon Keynote Speaker Announced

    The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation is honored to announce that Senator Juan Chuy Hinojosa, from McAllen, Tx is our next keynote speaker for our Signature Luncheon to be held on January 26, 2024 at the Omni Hotel in Corpus Christi, TX. The focus of this year's celebration will be on the military.
    Senator Hinojosa is a proud U.S. Marine, who currently serves as Vice Chair of the Senate Finance Committee. He was instrumental in securing funding for the 1 billion dollar Harbor Bridge Replacement Project. In 2021, Senator Hinojosa secured 45 million dollars for the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Arts and Media Building.
    In 2009, Senator Hinojosa passed legislation to designate the 3rd Wednesday in September as Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day, which authorized the observance of this day by schools and state agencies to honor Dr. Garcia and teach younger generations about his legacy.
    We are very honored and excited to be working with Senator Hinojosa on the Foundation's endeavors.

    Cecilia Garcia Akers nominated to UT System CCEC

    Cecilia Garcia Akers is extremely honored to have been nominated to the University of Texas System Chancellor's Council Executive Committee. The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation is proud of our continuing relationship with the University of Texas, and our commitment to advancing education and health care opportunities to those in need. Cecilia will be attending her first meeting in New York City in October, 2023. A proud South Texas girl bringing a bit of expertise in healthcare, and collaborating with a very important University System.

  • Our Lady of the Lake University endowment

    We are blessed with a wonderful relationship with Our Lady of the Lake University with a new $25,000.00 endowment to assist students in need.

    We are thrilled to be able to expand our philanthropy to a major Catholic University, that has a campus in San Antonio, Houston, and La Feria, TX. The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation is always grateful to assist students in need-one student at a time. May God continue to bless our efforts.

  • The John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston Dr. Hector P. Garcia Historic Recognition

    The John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston held its Osler Club meeting on March 21, 2023.

    A presentation titled "Dr. Hector P. Garcia: The Doctor to the Barrios" was given by second year medical student Jacqueline Ochoa, from McAllen , TX.

    The presentation was comprehensive, educational and relevant to the practice of medicine as it exists today.

    The Board of Directors of the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation extends its deepest gratitude to Ms. Ochoa, the Osler Club, and the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston in the naming of Dr. Hector P. Garcia as the McGoverns Academy of Oslerian Medicine,  Hector P. Garcia Society.

This annual luncheon also helps keep Dr. Hector’s legacy alive and supports the organization named in his honor, The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation.     It was a beautiful day for the Dr. Hector P. Garcia’s Birthday Memorial and Wreath-Laying Service at Seaside Memorial Park,                January 17, 2023.

    Dr. Hector Play and Legacy Luncheon Reception

    Friends and supporters of the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation came                 

     together on January 19, 2023 at the Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi to 

    honor the trailblazing civil rights leader. They were also treated to a scene

    of a play based on the remarkable life of Dr. Hector put on by the Department

    of Theater and Dance at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. It was also an opportunity

    to meet Dr. Abel Chavez, President of Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio.

    Dr. Chavez was the keynote speaker at the Annual Legacy Luncheon that celebrates

    IWA Mass Celebrates Dr. Hector's Legacy

    The third Wednesday of September is the official state recognition day for Dr. Hector P. Garcia.
    IWA was honored to hold a special Elementary and Middle Level Mass to honor his legacy.
    Dr. Hector P. Garcia's daughter, Cecilia Garcia-Akers '70 and his son-in-law, Jim Akers,
    attended the Mass along with family members and board members of the
    Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation. Fr. John Gaffney served as celebrant and
    reminded us of Dr. Hector P. Garcia's significant contributions in the areas of justice,
    education and health.
    Cecilia and Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation board members presented a check
    for $2,000 to the IWA Investing in Excellence tuition assistance program at the end of Mass.
    Cecilia also took time to visit with the fifth and eighth grade classes after Mass to
    teach them more about how her father advocated for change.

    TAMUCC creates Dr. Hector play

    The Department of Theatre and Dance at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has created a play based on the life of Dr. Hector P. Garcia. The play,“House Bill 3979 Amendment #10: The Life and Works of Dr. Hector P. Garcia” was written by Latina playwright Iraisa Ann Reilly. You will thoroughly enjoy this unique play about a true South Texas Hero.                                                                                                                                                                                         

    Performances were Sept. 27, through Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Warren Theatre. The students and all involved with this unique play did an amazing job paying tribute to Civil Rights Icon, Dr. Hector P. Garcia.
